SATURNIA

Probably the most important sign of Saturnia’s past is “Porta Romana” the medieval arc of which has been built on the remains of the Etruscan (or even older?) town wall. Through Porta Romana goes the old Roman road “Via Clodio”.

The attraction, however, are the sulphur waters, more than 37° Celsius hot, that are reported to be helpful in case of metabolic diseases, respiration problems and stomach trouble as well as rheumatic diseases.
Below Saturnia, direction of Montemerano, are the thermal baths, with the hot springs, within a walled complex.
Pleasantly light smell of sulphur evaporates from the bluish grey waters; they slowly flow through the reeds and those who take a bath there, – then it quickly runs to the water basin of the Gorello (free thermal bath). Young and a little bit older enjoy the free of charge relief of the warm sulphur waters in the cascade like waterfall. During summer, however, it can be rather packed.

“According to the legend, Saturnia was the first town ever built in our peninsula. The origin is mysterious, and the legend, in the high middle ages with the incumbent fear of the impending year 1000, became richer and richer. From everywhere magic waters sprang, from smoky and scorching pools, spreading the smell of sulphur which is the smell of the devil.

The time’s chronicles tell about meetings of witches and wizards, charms and sabbatical rites: a scenario nobody could imagine today, visiting this quiet and friendly village.”
Tourist info Saturnia on the Piazza. One can get a snack at the Enoteca “Bacco e Cerere” (closed Tuesday) where they also offer special local products.
